Dr. Sadia Afroze Sultana

Prof. Dr. Sadia Afroze Sultana is a Professor (Grade 1) at the Open School, Bangladesh Open University. She is passionate in research and teaching. Her academic career started with Honours and Masters in Physics from Jahangirnagar University in Dhaka. She joined BOU in 1998 as a lecturer of physics at Open School. In pursuit of excellence in her discipline of study, she enrolled herself in Doctor of Engineering program under Kyushu University in Japan and successfully completed doctoral degree in nuclear engineering in 2005. Since then, Prof. Sadia has consistently contributed to prestigious national and international journals of physics and nuclear science and engineering.
Prof. Sadia developed a strong interest in advancing methods and means of education for marginalized population in Bangladesh, particularly the education of girls, after being instilled with the values of BOU and in accordance with the functions of Open School. Her passions prompted her to delve deeply and collaborate with the Commonwealth of Learning (COL) and other open educational institutions in Asian and African nations. She spoke in a number of COL international forums, shared the research findings on open educational practices and perspectives, and adapted the learnings acquired from those forums in formulating and upgrading the open schooling strategies and practices in Bangladesh. In order to support open and remote learning for the intended audience, she also worked on a number of capacity building projects as well as research projects.
Prof. Sadia wanted to encourage Bangladeshi students to participate in the global academic community by using contemporary teaching pedagogies. As a result, she received extensive training and education from globally recognized institutions such as Open Polytechnic (New Zealand), Creative Commons (USA), and Harvard Law School (Berkman Klein Center) to enhance her knowledge of instructional design in e-learning, Creative Commons, and copyright. Her path to more focused and organized ODL delivery was made possible by specialized education. Additionally, she has been participating in internationally conducted open licensing courses as a Creative Commons (CC) enrolled Facilitator.
Throughout her distinguished academic career, Prof. Sadia left her mark at BOU, particularly in Open School. From 2012 until 2016, she served as dean of Open School. She effectively implemented the Niche1 program for Bangladesh Army students at the Higher Secondary level. Due to the program's success, other organizations, including the Bangladesh Navy and Air Force, decided to adopt it. She has been a useful contributor to maintaining BOU's educational standards. Additionally, from 2007 to 2016 and from 2022 to 2024, she led the Open School Science Curriculum committees. Prof. Sadia enjoys keeping her abreast of contemporary educational trends and technologies. She contributes value to open education with her varied knowledge and experience, and she is dedicated to excelling in her field and other interests.
