Profile of Dr. Md. Serazul Islam


Dr. Md. Serazul Islam is an accomplished academician with a strong background in Agricultural Engineering, specializing in Irrigation and Water Management. Currently holding the position of Professor (Grade 2) and Coordinator of the Master in Sustainable Agriculture and Rural Livelihood (MSARL) & MS in Irrigation and Water Management program at the School of Agriculture and Rural Development (SARD) at Bangladesh Open University (BOU).
 
Dr. Islam has earned notable academic achievements. Educationally, he obtained his Doctor of Engineering in Civil Engineering from Nagoya University, Japan, under the MEXT Fellowship Program. His Master of Science in Irrigation and Water Management from Bangladesh Agricultural University secured the top position, as did his Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Engineering from the same university with a first-class first position. His research interests encompass Irrigation and Water Management, Integrated Water Resources Management, Crop Cultivation with Optimum Water Uses, River Conservation Engineering, Flood Disaster and Risk Management, and e-learning.

Dr. Islam has a substantial publication record with 40 publications in reputable journals, focusing on areas such as the effects of irrigation and mulching on crop yield, water use efficiency, flood disaster risk management, and the quality of various agricultural products. Additionally, he has supervised numerous theses and project reports, including ongoing one PhD research, all centered on Irrigation and Water Management with crop cultivation. Beyond academic and research roles, his involvement includes serving on various committees, such as the Academic Council, Research Ethical Committee, Academic and Financial Regulation Committee of PhD and MPhil, and more. He has played a crucial role in curriculum development, project management, and has secured internal funds for research projects.

Dr. Islam's contributions extend internationally through research collaboration projects, and he has received recognition and merit awards throughout his academic journey, including the Professor S. M. Nazmul Haque Smrithy Gold Medal (2014), the University Prize (2011), Md. Nurul Hossain Gold Medal (2001), Ramapathi Nath Memorial Award (2000), American Association of Bangladeshi Engineers and Architect (AABEA) scholarship (2001), and the Monbukagakusho Scholarship from the Japanese Government for his doctoral course in Civil Engineering (October 2009 to September 2012).

Actively participating in professional bodies, Dr. Islam is a member of the Engineering Institution of Bangladesh (IEB), the Bangladesh Society of Agricultural Engineering (BSAE), and the Japanese Society of Civil Engineering (JSCE). His involvement in these organizations reflects his commitment to advancing knowledge in his field of Agricultural Engineering while promoting quality education at Bangladesh Open University.
